Paint

Painting is an important home improvement project. It can change the mood of your home as well as increase the value of your property. Paint can be categorized based on its uses and sheen. By uses, they are artists' paints, interior and exterior paint.

Artists' paints are designed for arts but can be used for home decoration. Watercolours, oil paints and acrylics can be used for adding decorative touches to wall borders, furniture, picture frames, flower pots, murals and more. These types of paints are not well suited for general wall or exterior painting.

Interior Paints: These are paints used for walls, ceilings and house trims. Interior paints are easy to clean and one can easily touch up existing paint.

Exterior Paints as the name implies are designed for use in the outer parts of the house; basically the outer walls. It can be used on wood, brick, and vinyl walls as well as aluminum sidings and wall trims. Exterior paints are mildew resistant and are made to fade over time. This paint is well –adapted to climate changes.

Both interior and exterior paints are water-based latex and oil-based paints. Latex paint cleans up with soap and water, oil-based paint must be cleaned using certain substance - paint thinner or turpentine . Although oil-based paints take longer time to dry, it is long lasting.

Some oil-based contain alkyds; alkyds are synthetic oils, while natural linseed oil is a major component of others. Alkyd oil-based paints are used by millions of people because it is low priced as well as durable.

Based on glossiness, paints are categorized into five. From dullest to shiniest, they are matte or flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss.

Note that the higher the gloss, the easier it is to maintain the paint but these paints serve different purposes. Higher sheen paints such as semi-gloss or gloss are used on trims, while the matte finish ones are used on the walls and ceilings.

How to Determine Quality Paint

Quality paint is not determined by price but by pigments, resin, additive and water content. Every manufacture makes inexpensive paints

Pigments: High-quality paint has better pigments, therefore it hides better; you don't need to apply several coats to achieve the desired result. The most expensive pigment in paint is titanium dioxide, a very white powder with exceptional hiding qualities. The less expensive pigments are as clay, silica and talc which are not as pure or white as titanium dioxide. The amount of pigment present in paint does not determine the quality; rather, the better quality pigment content does which affect the coverage level.

Resins: High-quality paint contains better resins which makes it sticks better and lasts longer. Resins are plastic-like substance in paint. They are used to water repellency and resistance to saponification. The best latex resins are made of acrylic. Quality binders last longer and have a level of resistant to blister, peeling and wear.

Water Content: High-quality paint contains more solid and this is determined by the measure of pigment and resins content as well as water. A higher percentage of solid means that it has a thicker paint film, better coverage and can last long.

Additive: High-quality paint has additives that can improve its protective qualities as well as application. All latex paints contain additives but high quality paint contains more.
