Rice is a good source of carbohydrate and our body needs carbohydrate for energy. Also, rice contains some essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin B, protein, and magnesium. It is cheap, easy to cook and versatile; it can be used in Mediterranean and Spanish dishes as well as in Asian cuisines. There are different types of rice, and they are healthier than the other.

White Rice

For white rice, the bran layer, husk and germs have been removed; these layers are removed through milling. Due to this extraction, it doesn’t have as much nutrient brown, black and red rice. White rice comes in short, medium and long; examples are Aborio, Japanese rice and Basmati respectively. Basmati rice are low in glycemic index (GI) while some other types of rice are high in GI. Basmati should not be over eaten to avoid overload of carbohydrate. White is seen as inferior because it has low fibre content.

Brown Rice

Like white rice, brown rice comes in short, medium and long grains. It is a good source of magnesium, thiamine, iron and a minimum amount of zinc is also found in brown rice. This rice type is whole grain and only the outer hull is. It is more nutritious than white rice, can be chewed easier and gives a nutty feeling in the mouth. Unlike white rice brown rice is high in fibre and has a medium GI which means it is filling and can keep you that way for long time.

Black Rice

This is a different species of rice which takes a longer time to cook than the aforementioned two. It gives a nutty and earthy feel. It is a good source of protein and contains a low GI; this is then recommended rice for diabetic patients. The fibre content for this rice type is high.

Red Rice

Red rice has a unique colour and contains anthocyanin. This rice is available in two types- hulled and unhulled. This type of rice is expensive and contains a higher amount of nutrients than white rice.
